Biosolids Beneficial Reuse - Land Application

Key benefits of land application:

  • Reduced disposal costs for customers

  • Eliminaing the need for landfill disposal, lowering waste volumes

  • Nutrient rich fertiliser being applied to agricultural land, promoting nutrient recycling and reducing the requirement for synthetic fertilisers.

Through the successful delivery of numerous sludge dewatering projects, Dredging Solutions has gained extensive experience in the application of treated biosolids to land.

Biosolids are nutrient-rich organic materials derived from the treatment of domestic sewage in wastewater treatment facilities. Beneficial land application of biosolids recycles valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, enhancing plant growth and reducing the need for chemical fertilisers. This sustainable practice improves soil structure, increases water retention, and promotes microbial activity.

Our detailed understanding of contamination and stabilisations grading requirements and our partnership with primary producers ensures the reuse of these products is truly beneficial. â€‹

Soil Injection Unit

Dredging Solutions soil injection service offers a cost-effective sludge management option for clients with suitable land in primary production zones. It is most suited to regional facilities that have direct access to moderate amounts of arable land.

Soil injection involves the direct application of sludge to agricultural lands, utilising a slurry tanker and custom designed plough to pump liquid sludges and effluent beneath the ground surface. The soil injection process can deliver the equivalent of up to 40mm of rainfall, as well as important nutrients and organic matter, directly into the root zone of plants where it’s most efficiently utilised.

Dredging Solutions custom built soil injection equipment allows sludge to be applied in a single pass, reducing soil disturbance and minimising compaction. Soil injection can also offer other benefits such as reduced risk of surface runoff, suppression of odour during land application, and is a compliant barrier mechanism for vector attraction reduction under the NSW EPA Biosolids Guidelines.
